LVH-M operates post-graduate residency programs in General Dentistry, Emergency Medicine, and Dermatology, and a Traditional Rotating Internship program. Direct program costs include the salaries, benefits and other non-wage expenses for the residents, educators, program directors and other administrative and support staff that devote some or all of their effort to graduate medical education. Net of the direct graduate medical education (DME) reimbursement from the Medicare program, the direct program costs for these programs totaled $2,936,122 in fiscal year 2005.

LVH: Includes a variety of publications such as the patient visitor guide, patient safety booklet, case management brochure, Tele-Intensivist and Hospitalist brochures, Having Your Baby booklet, and Gamma Knife and Regional Heart Center brochures. FY’05 expenditures for patient education publications total $182,000.
LVH-M: Includes a variety of publications such as the patient visitor guide, patient safety booklet, case management brochure, Tele-Intensivist and Hospitalist brochures, and Gamma Knife and regional Heart Center brochures. The cost to produce these publications in FY 2005 was $77,354.

Emergency Education - $297,922

The George E. Moerkirk Emergency Medicine Institute (EMI) in the Department of Emergency Medicine’s Division of Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services at Lehigh Valley Hospital provides a central point for all pre-hospital emergency medical training programs within our six county EMS region. Since its inception, the George E. Moerkirk EMI continues to expand its student population to include various community groups, businesses, industries, physician’s offices, schools, and health care organizations. In FY’05, the EMI provided training to 13,856 physicians, nurses, paramedics, and various other allied health care providers. The EMI also provided continuing education to over 2,200 pre-hospital providers at no charge. The cost of providing this program in FY’05 was $297,922.

Clinical Education - $7,904

LVH-M: Patient education resources include closed circuit TV at a cost of $6,600 and educational brochures and handouts costing approximately $1,304, for a total of $7,904 in FY 2005.

LVH-M serves as a clinical nursing education site for Northampton Community College Associate Degree and Practical Nursing Programs and East Stroudsburg University Baccalaureate Nursing Program. Approximately 100 students rotate through clinical sites during each semester. Students from the Cedar Crest College and DeSales University Baccalaureate Nursing programs have selected observation experiences in the Pediatric Specialty Center and Wound Center throughout the year. Twenty (20) students from the Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School Academy of Medical Science have observation experience in multiple clinical departments during the Spring semester.
